I would be interested to know more about how these students are prepared for handwriting vs typing, separate from writing instruction. Do all students receive systematic keyboarding instruction? Speaking from personal experience as an educator in the USA, there is a lot of variation year-to-year in both of these skills, depending in some part on the nature of their handwriting instruction (or other fine motor skill development, such as visual art) and keyboarding instruction (some years this is provided by a teacher, other years it is through online programs, and sometimes it disappears from the curriculum completely.)
